The tradition on BooBoo Hill on Warderick Wells is for cruisers to leave a piece of driftwood commemorating their visit to the Exuma Land & Sea Park. BooBoo Hill is named for the ships that hit the reef and sank just offshore. Legend has it that on a moonlit night you can hear the voices of the souls lost singing in the wind. And if you leave an offering to King Neptune on BooBoo Hill you'll be blessed with good luck on your voyages. Heaven knows we could use some luck, so of course, we found our piece of driftwood and continued the tradition! Add Comment Single file only -- Exuma Land & Sea Park is a Bahamian National Park -- but single file only. There's only a narrow band of deep enough water for boats, all on national park moorings. That's Winterlude, the dark hulled boat in the rear. Loved Warderick Wells -- be sure to check out the postings on commuterCRUISER.com! Weird! This morning on our way back to the boat from our walk, we passed the same flats that we walked by yesterday .... except today it looked like a moonscape! No water, nada! Waiting for mid to high tide so the water returns! The more time we spend at Highbourne Cay, courtesy of a stuck compression trof and accompanying 30 kt winds, the more we like it here! But early next week we'll move on -- we have much much more of the Exumas to explore! What a great sail - from the time we left Rodriguez Key (near Key Largo) to the time we dropped anchor at West Bay, New Providence in the Bahamas, we had the perfect weather window! This amazed me. You can't see it very well, but there a tiny light at the center bottom of this photo -- almost like a electric candle we'd put in a window. And the Fresnel lens in the Tybee Island Lighthouse (Savannah Georgia) magnifies it so that this lighthouse is easily seen 25 miles out to sea. Or so the literature claims - we haven't seen this one ourselves while out to sea.... yet. :) What a beautiful sight. I am fascinated with Fresnel lenses, invented and first used in a lighthouse in 1823.... it's a LONG time that this technology has survived and is still the best. Amazing in this world of computers that only last 4-5 years.... The Saint Simon Lighthouse ... keeping those of us floating around on the deep blue sea safe! I love lighthouses! T Minus 19 days and counting ... Hopefully by mid-March we'll be exploring the Exumas (southern Bahamas) and our little dinghy will see more of these types of days! |
